Ghana’s poultry industry is grappling with a crisis, facing major obstacles that are hindering its development, according to Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture.
During his vetting on Monday, January 20, Mr. Opoku highlighted the pressing need for reforms to tackle these challenges, stressing their importance for ensuring food security and promoting economic growth.
“The poultry industry is currently facing significant difficulties, including a substantial gap between demand and supply,” Opoku said.
To tackle this issue, he presented a detailed plan to revitalize the sector, making it a central priority of his leadership.
Mr. Opoku launched the “Poultry Farm to the Table Programme,” an initiative designed to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations to offer financial support and enhance production.
“To revamp the poultry sector, we have outlined a program in our manifesto. Under this initiative, we aim to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations, providing them with the necessary financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production,” he explained.
The program’s main objective is to reduce the gap between poultry product supply and the growing consumer demand. Mr. Eric Opoku also highlighted the high cost of poultry feed as a significant challenge and pledged to focus on increasing the production of affordable feed to ease the burden on farmers.
