Mahama and Maiga strengthen Ghana-Mali ties, commit to regional security and pan-African unity

President John Dramani Mahama and Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maiga have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling regional security challenges, enhancing trade relations, and advancing Pan-African ideals.

The meeting, which followed the delivery of a special message from Malian leader Assimi Goita, highlighted the importance of collaboration to ensure stability and prosperity in the sub-region.

Amid growing concerns over insurgency and terrorism in West Africa, Ghana and Mali are working together to strengthen their ties and promote the vision of African sovereignty.

The discussions between President Mahama and Prime Minister Maiga reflect a shared determination to uphold the principles of Pan-Africanism while addressing urgent challenges.

The leaders acknowledged the escalating threat of insurgency and terrorism in the region, emphasizing the need for collective action to secure peace and stability. President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s longstanding relationship with Mali, built on a strong history of trade and cultural exchanges, and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to facilitating the free flow of trade and economic cooperation.

Both leaders expressed optimism about the stalled Technical Joint Cooperation framework, stressing the need to revive it in order to remove obstacles and strengthen bilateral ties.

General Maiga commended Ghana’s hospitality and its pivotal role in Pan-Africanism, describing President Mahama as a heritage leader, in the tradition of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Jerry John Rawlings.

President Mahama also reaffirmed his vision for African sovereignty, citing leaders such as Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, Abdourahamane Tchiani of Niger, and Mali’s transitional president Assimi Goita as exemplars of the continent’s ongoing struggle for self-determination and independence.

The dialogue signals a renewed commitment to Pan-African unity, with Ghana and Mali poised to strengthen their partnership in pursuit of a prosperous and sovereign Africa.
