Knife attack at Slovak school leaves two dead
Two women, aged 18 and 51, lost their lives, and another young woman was injured in a knife attack at a school in eastern Slovakia.
The attack was carried out by an 18-year-old student, who initially fled the scene. Local police issued a warning to the public, urging them to avoid the suspect, but he was apprehended shortly afterward.
“We assure the public that all necessary measures are being taken to make you feel safe,” police said in a statement. Authorities later confirmed that the victims included two fellow students and a teacher.
Thanks to the suspect’s quick arrest, “there is at present no immediate danger,” the interior ministry stated, adding that police are implementing further measures to maintain public safety.
The attack occurred at around 13:00 local time (12:00 GMT) in the village of Spisska Stara Ves, located near the Polish border, approximately 380 km (230 miles) northeast of Bratislava.
Emergency medical teams quickly responded to the scene, according to broadcaster TA3.
Education Minister and Interior Minister have traveled to the site of the tragedy, while Prime Minister Robert Fico extended his condolences to the victims’ families and those affected.
The Slovak student union expressed profound sorrow in a statement: “Schools should be a place where young people grow, learn, and dream of a better future. Instead, we are witnessing violence and hatred finding their way into our classrooms.”
