Clinical psychologist suggests that parents alleviate the government’s burden from free SHS by covering meal expenses

Clinical psychologist Daniel Bruce has praised the government’s initiative to offer free education to Ghanaians while encouraging parents to support the effort by taking responsibility for their children’s school meals, helping to reduce costs for the government.

On January 15, 2025, Bruce highlighted that he had benefited from free education from primary school through to his master’s degree, attributing his support at the master’s level to government bursaries and noting that he received payments during his teacher training college days.

He emphasized that Ghanaians never had to beg or plead with politicians for free education, as it has been a longstanding tradition in the country.

He emphasized that the government had already made significant contributions by providing infrastructure, training teachers, and paying their salaries. As such, he argued that it was unrealistic to expect the government to also provide meals for children.

Bruce encouraged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s education and well-being rather than depending entirely on the government.

He proposed that parents contribute to their children’s education by covering meal costs, which would free up government resources to be directed toward other critical areas, such as building roads and housing.

‘’We want Ghana to develop so let’s help her in a way by paying for feeding so that our peace of mind is assured knowing that our children are eating well’’ he urged parents.
