President Mahama to investigate controversial National Cathedral project
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to launch an investigation into the National Cathedral Project, a flagship initiative of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo aimed at establishing a Christian worship center and symbolizing Ghana’s religious heritage.
The project has faced widespread criticism over allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, prompting concerns about its viability and funding.
During a Christian National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Mahama expressed skepticism about the project’s financial prudence amidst Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges.
“On the vexed issue of the National Cathedral, CHRAJ directed the government to audit the project and investigate any misuse of public funds. We will soon activate an investigation into the project,” he said.
President Mahama also questioned the cost of the initiative, which is reportedly estimated at $400 million. He contrasted it with Nigeria’s National Ecumenical Centre, which was completed at a cost of $30 million.
“In the current circumstances that Ghana is going through, it makes no sense to achieve such a project at a whopping sum of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which is used by the Christian faith in Nigeria, was built at the cost of $30 million”, he stated.
The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
