Finance Minister-designate advocates for road toll reintroduction

Finance Minister Designate, Dr. Ato Forson, has responded to inquiries regarding the reintroduction of road tolls as a measure to raise revenue, reiterating the NDC’s commitment to this policy for funding road maintenance.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointment Committee, Dr. Forson noted that while a previous government had abolished road tolls, there were indications that they might be reinstated before the administration’s term ended.

“The former government tried to centralise toll collections but faced challenges and later indicated the tolls might return. From day one, the NDC has been clear that road tolls would come back,” he said during his vetting on Monday, January 13, 2025.

He highlighted that the NDC has consistently been transparent about its plans and remains dedicated to keeping its promises. He also referenced a statement from former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, which reaffirmed the party's stance on the matter.

“Road tolls are a common practice worldwide. If you use the road, you contribute to its maintenance. Ghana will not be the first or last country to do this,” Dr. Forson stated.

He stressed the importance of collecting tolls efficiently to ensure the revenue directly supports road upkeep.

The Majority Leader also assured the committee that the policy would be effectively implemented, promising to enhance the country’s road infrastructure and benefit all Ghanaians.
