Former President John Dramani Mahama has proposed that privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) might help resolve the country’s ongoing electricity challenges.
During a meeting with a World Bank delegation in Accra on January 8, 2025, Mahama highlighted that private sector involvement in ECG could tackle issues such as inefficiency, financial losses, and poor service delivery. He believes this move could help modernize the energy sector and enhance its overall performance.
Reflecting on Ghana’s collaboration with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his tenure as Vice President, Mahama underscored the critical role of reliable electricity in driving economic growth.
He assured that any decision regarding ECG’s future would involve consultations with stakeholders to safeguard public interests while improving service delivery.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, the entire power system will face problems. Bringing in private sector expertise could help,” Mahama stated.
He also mentioned his intention to seek assistance from the World Bank to help guide this process.
This proposal is part of broader efforts to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of Ghana’s energy sector.
