Parliament establishes Appointments and Business Committees during the first session of the 9th Parliament
During the first session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, the Committee of Selection completed the composition of the Appointments and Business Committees and also reorganized its own membership.
This development followed the Committee’s appointment on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in accordance with Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and Standing Orders 204 and 205.
The Committee's objective was to ensure balanced representation of Parliament's diverse views while adhering to established House conventions. The deliberations were guided by Article 103 (5) of the Constitution, Order 154 of the Standing Orders, and contributions from the leadership of both the Majority and Minority Caucuses.Key Recommendations
The Committee presented several recommendations to facilitate the smooth functioning of Parliament and government:
- Approval of Business and Appointments Committees: The Committee proposed the immediate approval of the membership of the Business and Appointments Committees to enable parliamentary operations.
- Membership Ratios: Based on the approved ratio of 183:88, the Business Committee will comprise 15 members—10 from the Majority Caucus and 5 from the Minority Caucus. Similarly, the Appointments Committee will have 11 members, with 7 from the Majority Caucus and 4 from the Minority Caucus.
- Additional Members: In accordance with Order 217 (2), additional members from relevant committees will be integrated into the Appointments Committee as necessary.
The Committee pledged to finalize and submit the membership of other parliamentary committees for approval as soon as possible.
