‘Stop the blame game!’: Herbert Krapa fires back at NDC’s dumsor warning

Former Minister of Energy, Herbert Krapa, has rejected assertions of an imminent load shedding crisis, urging the newly elected NDC government to prioritize effective power sector management over apportioning blame to the previous administration.

Responding to comments by John Jinapor, Co-Chairman of the Transition Team’s Energy and Natural Resources sub-committee, Herbert Krapa refuted claims that Ghana’s fuel stock was critically low, risking widespread power outages.

“Mr. Jinapor is mistaken. Load shedding doesn’t just ‘loom.’ It stems either from technical issues, emergencies, or poor sector management. Clearly, Mr. Jinapor is haunted by the latter,” Herbert Krapa said in a statement.

Mr. Jinapor had earlier alleged that the Akufo-Addo-led government left the power sector in disarray, with only five hours’ worth of fuel available for power generation, a situation he warned could lead to dumsor (load shedding).

However, Krapa maintained that the previous government ensured a steady supply of fuel before leaving office. “We left sufficient light crude oil for Cenpower and continued heavy fuel oil deliveries for AKSA to generate power,” he noted.

He stressed that the responsibility for maintaining stable electricity now rests with the new administration, which must procure additional liquid fuel and plan effectively to avoid disruptions.

“The NDC must avoid needless finger-pointing and focus on practical solutions. We kept the lights on for eight years, even during tough times, and they can do the same if they manage competently,” Krapa concluded.
