Prez Mahama revokes appointments of MMDCEs
President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate dismissal of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs), as well as Assembly Members appointed under the relevant sections of the Local Governance Act.
This decision was communicated through an official letter, dated January 8, 2025, and signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the President’s Secretary.
The letter cited the authority granted by the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), which gives the President the power to make such appointments and changes.
In the interim, Coordinating Directors from the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been instructed to assume the role of acting Chief Executives, ensuring continuity in governance as permanent appointments are finalized.
This decision is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local governance structures and improve service delivery at the district level.
The revocation impacts key local government officials nationwide, signaling a significant shift in the management of local assemblies.
President Mahama’s action is expected to open the door for the appointment of new officials who will be in line with the government’s development priorities.
