The 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will officially dissolve today, January 6, 2025, clearing the way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament.
This marks the conclusion of the legislative term that began on January 7, 2021.
The dissolution will occur during a final sitting, presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. During this session, Members of Parliament will finalize all pending business and bid farewell to the chamber as the term concludes.
The 8th Parliament has been one of the most fiercely contested in Ghana’s history, with both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) holding an equal number of seats at the start—137 each, along with one Independent Member. This unique balance often led to intense debates and complex negotiations in the legislative process.
Following the dissolution, newly elected Members of Parliament will take their oath at midnight, officially marking the beginning of the 9th Parliament.
This transition will also involve the election of a new Speaker or the re-election of the current Speaker, depending on the outcome.
The 9th Parliament is expected to address critical national issues, including economic recovery, healthcare reforms, and resolving electoral disputes from the recent general elections.
