GWCL shuts down Bonsa Headworks due to pollution from illegal mining activities
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the closure of the Bonsa Headworks, which supplies 75% of the potable water to Tarkwa and surrounding areas.
This shutdown is due to the severe pollution of the Bonsa River, caused by illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey.’
A statement from Wisdom Dogbey, District Manager of GWCL Tarkwa, explained that the contamination has made the water unfit for treatment. Despite efforts to resolve the issue, the company has been unable to resume operations.
“We have exhausted all options, but the situation persists, leading to the closure,” the statement said.
GWCL is continuing to monitor the river’s quality to determine when the plant can safely restart production.
The company has assured the public that updates will be provided as developments occur.
Until the situation improves, water supply to Tarkwa and nearby areas remains severely affected.
This shutdown underscores the increasing environmental and public health concerns linked to illegal mining in Ghana. Residents are encouraged to conserve water as alternative solutions are explored to address the crisis.
