Shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea kills one tourist, injures another
A shark attack off Egypt’s Red Sea coast has resulted in the death of one tourist and left another injured, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday, north of Marsa Alam, a resort town known for its diving spots.
The environment ministry noted that the attack took place in “deep waters outside of the designated swimming area.”
While the victims were identified as foreign nationals, AFP reported they were Italians, citing an unnamed source from the Italian foreign ministry.
The 48-year-old man who died was from Rome, and the 69-year-old injured man was also Italian. Both tourists were rushed to a hospital in Port Ghalib, located around 30 miles from Marsa Alam.
In response to the attack, the designated swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed, and an investigation is underway.
Over the past decade, there have been four confirmed shark attack fatalities in the Red Sea, according to data from the independent Shark Research Institute.
The most recent fatality occurred in June 2023 near Hurghada, involving a 24-year-old Russian man.
