Ghana records 4,155 suspected cholera cases with 35 deaths
Ghana has recorded 4,155 suspected cholera cases as of December 23, 2024, with 35 fatalities, according to Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
In a statement released on December 24, he identified the Western Region as the most affected, reporting 17 deaths.
Dr. Aboagye highlighted the efforts to curb the outbreak, stating, “Between November 30 and December 19, 2024, an oral vaccination campaign was conducted in hotspot areas, including Awutu Senya East, Ahanta West, Effia-Kwesimintim, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Shama districts.”
He noted that 662,906 individuals out of an eligible population of 792,482 received the vaccine.
“The number of reported cases in these districts has declined steadily after the vaccination campaign,” Dr. Aboagye said, adding, “Awutu Senya East has not recorded any confirmed case following the exercise.”
As the festive season approaches, he urged the public to prioritize hygiene to prevent further spread.
“Drink potable water, eat hot food, thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables, and practice proper handwashing with soap under running water,” he advised.
He also encouraged individuals experiencing diarrhea and vomiting to seek medical attention promptly.
