Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has attributed the low voter turnout in the recent elections to growing frustration over unmet promises and economic hardship.
In an interview on Joy News’ Super Morning Show on December 23, Mr. Mercer explained that many voters felt disappointed by the government’s failure to fulfill its commitments, which significantly influenced their choices at the polls.
“People voted because their promises hadn’t been fulfilled,” he said, emphasizing the public’s discontent with the political system.
He highlighted the struggling economy as a major factor contributing to voter dissatisfaction. “No one can escape the reality of the economy,” he remarked, pointing out the negative impact of economic challenges on citizens’ daily lives.
Mr. Mercer also noted that the lack of incentives during party primaries further discouraged voter participation, intensifying the sense of frustration.
His comments reflect a broader issue in Ghana’s political climate: citizens are seeking tangible outcomes and genuine economic relief, rather than temporary incentives or unfulfilled political promises.
