Parliament passes Ghana Boundary Commission bill to strengthen Boundary Management
Parliament has passed the Ghana Boundary Commission Bill, 2023 after its third reading on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
The new law is designed to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to effectively handle boundary demarcation and resolve disputes. Major General Dr. Emmanuel Wekem Kotia, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, expressed confidence in the bill’s passage. He stated that it would provide the Commission with greater authority to manage boundary issues.
Dr. Kotia also noted that the bill is in line with the Commission’s mandate and adheres to international best practices.
It also empowers the body to carry out social interventions designed to alleviate the challenges faced by residents in underprivileged border communities.
“The passage of this bill enhances our mandate, and I am confident that Ghana will ultimately benefit as we address boundary-related issues,” stated Dr. Kotia.
He emphasized that the bill would also help Ghana preserve peace and stability along its borders while improving the living conditions of those in border regions.
