NRSA cautions drivers and pedestrians ahead of the Christmas season

The Western Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority, Victor Kojo Bilson, has emphasized the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices, especially during the upcoming Christmas season.

According to Mr. Bilson, “Poor vehicle maintenance can lead to accidents. Road safety is a collective responsibility, and it’s not just about one person.”

He noted that hitting someone with a vehicle and fleeing the scene is an offence, as is making phone calls or using headphones while crossing the road.

Mr. Bilson advised pedestrians to cross roads with caution, looking left, right, and center before and after crossing. He also cautioned against running while crossing the road and emphasized the importance of being mindful of motorbikes.

The regional head also highlighted the dangers of speeding and driver fatigue.

“As a driver, if you wake up feeling tired or unwell, you should not drive. Check if you are well rested before getting behind the wheel.” He noted that the law requires drivers to rest for 15 minutes after every two hours of continuous driving, and commercial drivers are not allowed to drive for more than 8 hours a day.

Mr. Bilson also emphasized the importance of commercial passenger-carrying vehicles belonging to recognized transport institutions.

“This allows us to monitor and ensure that drivers are adhering to safety regulations,” he explained. Commercial drivers have until March next year to register with a recognized transport institution.

He cautioned drivers to use their low beams when driving at night and reminded everyone that wearing a seatbelt is mandatory by law. “We plead with everyone to be careful this Christmas season and to prioritize road safety,” he said.
