Parliament reconvenes at AICC following 2024 general elections
Parliament is set to hold its first session since the December 7 general elections today, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
This historic gathering marks the legislative body’s reassembly after a decisive electoral period that has significantly altered Ghana’s political landscape.
The session follows a circular from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the venue. Speaker Alban Bagbin had earlier issued a notice on December 2, summoning Parliament to resume its duties, citing the importance of addressing post-election developments.
Shift in Parliamentary Dynamics
The elections have brought a dramatic change in the composition of Parliament, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) achieving a majority. Several prominent Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah Kubi, lost their seats, signaling a shift in the balance of power.
This outcome complements the NDC’s victory in the presidential race, where John Dramani Mahama defeated Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP.
Pre-Election Suspension and Speaker’s Decision
Before the elections, the Majority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had called on Speaker Bagbin to reconvene Parliament to address urgent legislative matters. However, the Speaker postponed the sitting until after the polls, a decision that generated mixed reactions among lawmakers.
Focus of Today’s Sitting
The session is expected to focus on critical post-election matters, including the transition to a new government and the establishment of legislative priorities for the incoming administration.
