NPP predicted Mahama’s victory months before 2024 elections – Nana Akomea says
Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had anticipated John Dramani Mahama’s victory months before the December 2024 elections.
In an appearance on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Akomea shared that internal research conducted by the NPP in February 2024 indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Mahama, was leading by a margin of ten percentage points.
“In February and March, the NDC was ahead by about 10 percentage points, which was quite concerning,” Akomea said. However, by September and October, the gap had narrowed to just two points. “We felt confident as the momentum shifted, but we also recognized a sense of apathy and discontent among our supporters,” he added.
Despite the narrowing gap, the final election results reflected the earlier projections. On December 9, 2024, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa declared John Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total vote, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Akomea also expressed concerns over voter turnout, calling for an investigation into why nearly two million voters abstained from voting, labeling the low turnout as “massive.”
The NPP plans to thoroughly analyze these factors to better understand the electorate’s sentiments and determine the reasons behind their loss.
