Economist advises caution on tax policies, urges gradual approach

Economist Dr. Peter Terkper has advised the incoming government to carefully evaluate the economic environment before implementing any new tax policies.

He pointed out the risks of reduced revenue and the constraints imposed by Ghana’s current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

While acknowledging that the proposed initiatives could pave the way for economic growth, Dr. Terkper stressed that challenges persist in creating alternative revenue sources.

He further urged the new administration to adopt a gradual, step-by-step approach, highlighting that limited fiscal resources could hamper immediate spending plans.

Dr. Terkper also urged the next government to stabilise inflation, interest rates, and currency depreciation to support local businesses and boost revenue.
