The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed deep concern over the violence and unrest following the 2024 general elections. In a statement, the bishops strongly condemned the ongoing rioting, looting, and violent acts that have disrupted peace, caused loss of lives, and deepened societal divisions.

They emphasized that such actions undermine Ghana’s core values of peace, unity, and respect for life. The bishops called for an immediate end to the violence and appealed to citizens to uphold the nation’s longstanding tradition of peaceful democratic processes.

Highlighting the detrimental impact of violence on democracy and vulnerable communities, the bishops urged political leaders to take responsibility by denouncing illegal activities carried out by their supporters and actively promoting peace and respect for the rule of law.

They reminded political leaders that their roles extend beyond seeking power to guiding their followers with wisdom and ensuring the well-being of all Ghanaians.

Addressing the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, the bishops called for professionalism and fairness in handling the unrest. They encouraged security personnel to decisively address perpetrators of violence while safeguarding citizens and property, stressing the need for justice to prevail.

The statement also appealed to religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the public to work together to restore peace and national cohesion through dialogue and mutual respect.

The bishops concluded by expressing hope that Ghana, with collective effort, would overcome this challenging period and emerge stronger and more united.

Their call adds to the growing voices advocating for calm and constructive resolution during this critical post-election period.
