NDC’s Blay Nyameke Armah Unseats Egyapa Mercer in Sekondi Parliamentary Race
In a significant upset, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi and a representative of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lost his seat to Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
Egyapa Mercer secured 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while his NDC opponent garnered 14,558 votes, achieving 56.40%. Out of the 25,813 votes cast, 171 ballots were rejected.
This result marks a dramatic reversal for Egyapa Mercer, who had dominated the Sekondi seat in the 2016 elections.
Back then, he won convincingly with 16,839 votes (59.47%), defeating Emmanuel Assifuah of the NDC as well as candidates from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
Blay Nyameke Armah’s victory is seen as a strong statement for the NDC in Sekondi, showcasing their growing influence in a constituency previously regarded as an NPP stronghold.
