Shooting incident in Awutu Senya East leaves one dead
A shooting incident in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region during Saturday’s polls has claimed the life of one person and left another critically injured.
The victims, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were reportedly targeted by occupants of a V8 vehicle who opened fire.
According to reports, the incident occurred after NDC Parliamentary Candidate Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor allegedly declared herself the winner of the parliamentary elections.
The attack took place as she and her supporters were heading home following vote counting and collation activities.
Sources within the Ghana Police Service have confirmed that the victims were indeed supporters of Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are working to identify the assailants.
“This is a worrying development, especially in a constituency that has a history of electoral violence,” said a local observer, referencing past incidents in Awutu Senya East that have made it a known hotspot during elections.
This marks the second fatal shooting during Ghana’s 2024 elections. In a similar incident in the Tolon constituency of the Northern Region, one person was killed in a shooting incident.
Police have since arrested four suspects connected to that case.
The latest violence underscores ongoing concerns about security during electoral processes in the country. Law enforcement agencies have been urged to act swiftly to ensure justice and maintain peace.
