Confusion erupts at Legon as NPP and NDC supporters clash over alleged vote-buying
Confusion erupted at the University of Ghana campus between supporters of incumbent MP Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate John Dumelo over accusations of vote-buying.
Supporters of Dumelo alleged that some individuals affiliated with Alhassan were distributing money to voters at the University of Ghana SRC Union building.
This prompted an NDC supporter to try recording the incident on video, but NPP supporters objected and insisted that the footage be deleted.
The situation quickly escalated into a heated verbal confrontation between the two groups.
Tensions reached a boiling point when military officers, arriving in two pick-up vehicles, were deployed to the scene, which led to further outrage from the NDC supporters.
They questioned the necessity of the military’s presence in the situation.
