Special Voting underway in Western and Eastern Regions

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is conducting a rescheduled special voting exercise in the Eastern and Western regions today, December 5, 2024, ahead of the December 7 general elections.

This exercise was initially slated for December 2 but was postponed due to concerns about the integrity of the ballot papers.

The decision followed the discovery of a defaced ballot paper marked for destruction near the Checkpoint Printing House. Although no issues were identified with the Western Region’s materials, the ballots for both regions were reprinted as a precaution because the same printing facility handled them. The EC delivered the reprinted materials on December 4 to ensure the exercise could proceed.

The special voting process allows election officials, security personnel, and media practitioners who will be on duty on election day to cast their votes in advance.

Polling stations opened at 7:00 AM and will close at 5:00 PM. Only individuals listed in the Special Voters Register can participate, and biometric verification systems are in place to ensure accuracy and transparency.

Votes cast today will be sealed and secured at the EC’s regional offices until counting begins on December 7. EC Chairperson Jean Mensa reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.

The EC has urged voters to adhere to guidelines and maintain peace during the exercise, with the successful completion of today’s voting expected to boost public confidence in the upcoming general elections.
