GCAG urges presidential candidates to commit to Anti-Galamsey pact
The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has appealed to all presidential candidates contesting the 2024 general elections to sign a national pledge against illegal and irresponsible mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The coalition believes this pledge is essential to addressing the pressing environmental and economic threats posed by the practice.
The request follows the recent signing of the 4th Presidential Peace Pact, which focused on ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
GCAG sees this as an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate collective resolve in tackling national challenges, including galamsey.
Comprising media, labor unions, religious groups, civil society, academia, youth organizations, and business entities, the coalition has formally reached out to candidates through letters requesting their signatures.
GCAG emphasized that signing the pledge would symbolize a commitment to combating galamsey, which has severely impacted Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves, and ecological balance.
It highlighted the potential environmental, economic, and public health crises if illegal mining persists.
The coalition plans to publicly announce the candidates who sign the pledge on Thursday, December 5, 2024. It views this as a crucial step toward preserving Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future.
