Mahama calls for change, highlights economic crisis and governance challenges ahead of December 7 election

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has offered a candid assessment of Ghana’s current political and economic landscape.

Mahama underscored the significance of the December 7 election, describing it as pivotal not only for Ghana’s democratic future but also for addressing the country’s pressing economic crisis and governance issues.

He portrayed the upcoming election as a defining moment in Ghana’s history, given the prevailing economic turmoil, rising debt, high inflation, and diminished trust in vital institutions like the judiciary.

Mahama pointed out the substantial debt burden inherited from the current government, noting the increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio from 55.6% to 104%.

He also criticized the economic mismanagement under the present administration, particularly the government’s excessive borrowing without sufficient investment in infrastructure or productive sectors, which has further strained the nation’s finances.

The former president emphasized the negative impact of poor governance on essential sectors such as energy, healthcare, education, and agriculture. He referred to the energy sector as a “ticking time bomb,” highlighting unsustainable debts and mismanagement that pose serious risks to the country’s power supply.

Mahama outlined the NDC’s vision for restoring fiscal discipline, enhancing governance, and creating a business-friendly environment to attract investment.

He reiterated the need to eliminate certain regressive taxes, such as the e-levy, and to cut government spending to open up more opportunities for local businesses. He also pledged to hold government officials accountable, vowing that those implicated in misappropriating state resources would face prosecution under an NDC administration.

Mahama concluded by urging Ghanaians to recognize the urgency of the situation and to vote for change. He warned against vote-buying and stressed the long-term consequences of maintaining the current government.

He reinforced the NDC’s dedication to addressing economic challenges, creating jobs, and implementing social programs to support Ghanaians, such as free tertiary education for people with disabilities and support for young entrepreneurs.
