Syria: Four civilians killed in attack on university dormitories in Aleppo
Four civilians, including two students, were killed on Friday in Aleppo, Syria, following an insurgent shelling of university dormitories, according to the state news agency SANA.
The attack was reportedly carried out by rebels from the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, who had launched an incursion on Wednesday into several towns and villages in the northwestern Aleppo province, which is controlled by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
The day after the attack, Russian and Syrian warplanes conducted airstrikes on rebel-held areas in northwest Syria, near the Turkish border, in an attempt to repel the insurgent offensive.
This marked the first significant territorial gains for the rebels in years.
The assault is the largest since March 2020 when Russia, backing Assad, and Turkey, supporting the rebels, brokered a ceasefire to end the years of violence that had displaced millions of Syrians opposed to Assad’s regime.
