Dozens are feared dead after a boat capsized on the Niger River in central Nigeria, according to Makama Suleiman, a spokesperson for the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
The vessel was reportedly carrying mostly traders from Missa community in Kogi state who were en route to a weekly market in neighboring Niger state.
“Rescue operations are currently underway,” Suleiman said, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear.
He noted that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, significantly heightening the risk of fatalities.
