Asiedu Nketiah instructs MPs to boycott emergency parliament sessions

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has directed the party’s Members of Parliament to avoid attending any emergency recall of Parliament, asserting that such sessions are merely schemes to further corrupt activities.

Addressing party supporters in the Western Region on Saturday, November 16, Nketiah argued that with the 2024 general elections approaching, there is no valid reason for Parliament to reconvene except to push questionable agendas.

He urged NDC MPs to resist any attempts to participate in these sessions, claiming they would only serve to extend alleged corruption practices that have persisted over the past eight years.

Nketiah’s call follows a recent Supreme Court decision on November 12, which overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

The ruling, prompted by a legal challenge from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, clarified that a parliamentary seat can only be declared vacant if an MP switches political parties while still holding office.

However, two justices dissented, suggesting the Supreme Court may not have jurisdiction over such matters, underscoring differing interpretations within the judiciary regarding its authority on parliamentary issues.

Asiedu emphasized that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the NDC will adhere to its own parliamentary procedures.
