Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), has criticized Ghanaian voters for perpetuating corruption by prioritizing money over policy during elections.
Dr. Ayariga expressed concern that this practice undermines democracy and hinders the election of qualified leaders.
During his interview, Dr. Ayariga recounted his campaign experiences, noting that many voters demanded cash before agreeing to support him.
He condemned this behavior as a form of corruption, saying, “We are endorsing corruption instead of endorsing policies.”
He highlighted that these demands largely drive the high costs of campaigning, which, he argued, divert attention away from substantive discussions on the country’s future. Dr. Ayariga emphasized the need for integrity in the electoral process and urged voters to reject the practice of vote-buying.
Dr. Ayariga further explained that when financial incentives take precedence over the nation’s long-term welfare, it leads to the election of incompetent leaders, with damaging effects on the country’s development and governance.
The APC leader urged Ghanaians to shift their mindset and prioritize the country’s sovereignty. He stressed the importance of electing capable leaders who can drive national transformation and reduce reliance on foreign aid.
“Selling your vote for money today jeopardizes the future of our youth, who will continue to beg instead of benefiting from lasting opportunities,” he warned.
Dr. Ayariga also called on citizens to stop seeking handouts from politicians, stressing that this would promote fairness and accountability in governance. “When we stop asking for gifts, we can demand justice, accountability, and true prosperity,” he said, urging Ghanaians to put the nation’s progress ahead of personal interests.
