A lightning strike at a Ugandan refugee camp claimed the lives of 13 children and one adult, according to police reports.

The victims were attending a church service on Saturday evening when lightning hit, leaving another 34 people injured.

The tragic incident took place at Palabek Refugee Settlement in northwestern Uganda, an area that has recently experienced severe thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke informed the BBC that the adult victim was 21 years old, though he did not specify the ages of the children who perished.

Palabek Refugee Settlement is home to over 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers, primarily from South Sudan, as reported by the UN’s refugee agency.

This incident marks yet another lightning-related tragedy in Uganda; four years ago, 10 children lost their lives to lightning in the nearby city of Arua while on a break from playing football.
