A beauty queen in Rwanda, Divine Muheto, has been arrested for drink-driving and operating a vehicle without a license.

According to police, the recent Miss Rwanda winner caused damage to “infrastructure” before fleeing the scene, although it remains unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.

Authorities stated that this is not the first instance of the 21-year-old driving under the influence.

Muheto has not yet commented publicly on her arrest, which was confirmed by the police on Tuesday amid rumors surrounding a collision.

A court in Kigali is set to hear her case on Thursday, as reported by a spokesperson for the prosecution.

Muheto rose to fame after winning the national beauty contest in 2022, but the competition has been suspended since then due to allegations of sexual misconduct against its organizers.

In Rwanda, drink-driving is punishable by a fine of 150,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $110 or £85) and up to five days in police custody.

The Rwandan police have ramped up enforcement of traffic laws in recent years, leading to thousands of arrests for drink-driving offenses.

In 2022, a member of parliament stepped down after apologizing for a similar violation.

The government claims that these stringent measures have significantly decreased the number of fatal road accidents in the country.
