UTAG suspends strike against galamsey to pursue alternative advocacy
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called off its recent strike, initially launched on October 10 to protest the severe environmental and social consequences of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.
In a statement dated October 29, UTAG National President Professor Mamudu Akudugu announced the suspension of the industrial action, acknowledging that while the decision was challenging, it was made in consideration of current national circumstances and the educational needs of students and their families.
UTAG reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for effective and sustainable solutions to the illegal mining crisis, emphasizing that it would continue its efforts through legal and alternative measures.
The association thanked its members for their dedication and underscored its mission to safeguard Ghana’s environment, water sources, and communities from the impacts of illegal mining.
The association pledged to remain resolute in the fight for environmental justice, sustainable development, and protection of natural resources for future generations, while expressing gratitude to the public for their support.
