Founder of Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor passes away
Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, according to family sources.
Akua Donkor, a notable advocate for farmers’ and women’s rights, passed on Monday, October 28, though details surrounding her death remain undisclosed.
Known for her dedication to grassroots communities and her bold public presence, Donkor ran multiple times for Ghana’s presidency, despite limited resources.
Her efforts gained her recognition as she became an influential figure in advocating for the marginalized. In the 2024 election, she was listed as the third candidate on the ballot, signaling her continued commitment to her political ideals.
Donkor’s presidential ambitions began when she served as the Assemblywoman for Herman. Her first attempt at the presidency in 2012 was cut short by disqualification from the Electoral Commission, which ruled she did not meet eligibility requirements.
Instead of pursuing legal action, Donkor supported Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
In 2016, her candidacy was again affected when fire destroyed the GFP headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region. Her passing marks the end of an era for her distinct role in Ghana’s political landscape.
