U.S. implements visa restrictions on individuals threatening Ghana’s democracy
Ahead of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections, the U.S. Department of State has implemented new visa restrictions aimed at individuals involved in actions that compromise democratic integrity in Ghana.
Announced on October 28, the policy, under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, imposes visa restrictions on individuals found to be undermining Ghana’s electoral process, including any acts of manipulation, violence, voter intimidation, or interference with freedoms of association or assembly.
This initiative is directed toward individuals, rather than the general public or government, and includes potential restrictions on certain family members of those targeted.
In its announcement, the U.S. acknowledged Ghana’s record of peaceful power transitions over three decades, emphasizing its commitment to supporting a fair, transparent, and peaceful election for Ghana’s future.
Through these measures, the U.S. reiterates its dedication to safeguarding democratic values and discouraging any activities that could harm Ghana’s election process.
