Alex Tetteh optimistic that the Supreme Court will resolve parliamentary seat dispute
Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, has expressed optimism that the Supreme Court will issue a final ruling on the matter of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant before the next parliamentary session.
Djornobuah hopes this ruling will prevent a recurrence of the previous sitting, where both New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs claimed majority status, leading to an NPP boycott of proceedings.
The dispute began after Speaker Bagbin declared the seats vacant, a decision that was later stayed by the Supreme Court. Despite this, the Minority continues to assert their majority status.
The Majority contends that the suspension of parliamentary sittings due to this disagreement is hindering essential government business, prompting their call for a recall of Parliament.
Speaking in an interview, Djornobuah, who is also the MP for Sefwi-Akontombra, expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will soon issue a final decision, which could alleviate tensions in Parliament and resolve the vacant seat issue.
He noted that the court proceedings are set to begin on Friday and expressed hope that the matter would be addressed swiftly, stating that while they cannot control the court’s timeline, they are hopeful for a prompt resolution.
