GAF clarifies military presence during parliamentary session
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has clarified that the deployment of military personnel at the Accra International Conference Center on Tuesday, October 22, was made at the request of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
This clarification comes in response to media reports suggesting that the military’s presence was intended to interfere with parliamentary proceedings during the Fifth Meeting of the Fourth Session.
In a statement issued the same day, GAF refuted these claims, labeling the reports as false. The statement emphasized that the deployment was part of standard security procedures whenever Parliament convenes outside its traditional chambers, and specifically for conducting routine Canine and Bomb Sweeps.
GAF explained that the Speaker, through the Clerk of Parliament, had formally requested security support on October 21 to ensure the safety of the facility.
The military stressed that its role was purely precautionary, involving checks for potential explosive devices or harmful substances, and had no connection to parliamentary business.
The Armed Forces urged the public to disregard any false reports and called on media outlets to exercise responsible journalism when covering such sensitive issues, noting that misinformation can harm the reputation of the military.
