Afenyo-Markin to push for Parliament recall
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed plans to initiate a recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to indefinitely adjourn parliamentary proceedings.
In an interview on Citi FM, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern over the Speaker’s actions, suggesting that they are part of a broader strategy by National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to obstruct government business and disrupt Ghana’s economy.
He affirmed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would take steps to counter these tactics and ensure the continuation of parliamentary work.
Alexander criticized the Speaker’s handling of recent developments, accusing him of neglecting a court ruling that required action from Parliament.
He questioned the decision to adjourn the House after a disagreement over which caucus should sit on the Majority side, noting that the Speaker’s actions undermine the proper functioning of Parliament.
The Majority Leader recounted a meeting with the Speaker, where Bagbin mentioned the need for more time for consultations before adjourning Parliament.
However, Afenyo-Markin expressed his frustration, pointing out that the Supreme Court’s ruling had not been addressed, and highlighting the Speaker’s lack of intervention when the Minority took the Majority’s seats.
Afenyo-Markin signaled the NPP’s intent to recall Parliament and challenge the Speaker’s decisions, aiming to ensure that parliamentary proceedings resume without further delay.
