Running mate for CPP blames small-scale mining as responsible for galamsey

Lawyer Wayoe Ghanamannti, the Running Mate for the Convention People’s Party, has raised concerns about the small-scale mining licensing regime as a key factor in Ghana’s galamsey crisis.

“I keep telling people that the root of the problem lies in the small-scale mining licensing system. To find a solution, we must address the source,” Ghanamannti stated during an October 14, 2024 interview.

He outlined his party’s vision to transition small-scale mining operations into medium-scale ones if they come to power, encouraging individuals to pool resources for collective operation. Ghanamannti believes this approach could create valuable employment opportunities for the youth.

Additionally, he highlighted the party’s commitment to restoring lands affected by galamsey.

The restoration strategy would include allowing some areas to recover naturally through fallowing, while others requiring more intensive intervention would undergo scientific engineering to restore their productivity.
