Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana Condemns Protest Excesses Against Judiciary
The Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) has strongly condemned the behavior of demonstrators during a recent protest against what they described as delays in hearing cases related to the anti-LGBTQI legislation at the Supreme Court.
The demonstration, organized by supporters of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, led by Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George, took place on October 8, 2024. Protesters expressed their frustration over what they perceive as a deliberate effort by the Judiciary to postpone the hearings on the legality of the bill.
Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, President of the AMJG, noted that the demonstrators ignored explanations provided by the Registrar of the Supreme Court regarding the status of the pending cases and proceeded with their protest.
The Association expressed concern over the use of derogatory language directed at the Judiciary and the Chief Justice, as well as the demonstrators’ demands for a judgment in their favor on the LGBTQ cases still awaiting deliberation.
AMJG highlighted that such conduct poses a serious threat to the integrity of the judicial system and the principles it upholds. They called for all Ghanaians to denounce these actions in order to protect judges and Judicial Service staff.
In light of these events, Justice Kwofie urged individuals with cases before the courts to exercise restraint and maintain decorum, emphasizing that such behavior is essential to uphold the integrity of the administration of justice.
