Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr, the flag bearer for the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), has emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to seek alternative solutions to combat the harmful effects of galamsey activities.
In an interview with an Accra-based media outlet on October 9, 2024, Dr. Lartey, who has taken over the party’s leadership from his father, highlighted the importance of educating and inspiring the youth to pursue sustainable farming as an alternative to illegal mining.
He expressed concern over the negative impact of galamsey on the agricultural sector, noting that it has diminished the appeal of farming as a viable and profitable career choice, particularly for young people.
Dr. Lartey stressed that integrating agriculture with modern technology is crucial for Ghana’s advancement, promising significant investments in tech to bolster socioeconomic progress.
If allowed to lead, he vowed to prioritize agricultural growth, recognizing it as the foundation of the nation’s economy.
Additionally, he voiced concerns about Ghana’s ongoing reliance on food imports despite the country’s abundant agricultural land. To address this issue, Dr. Lartey pledged to launch “Operation Feed Yourselves” to promote food self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on imported food products.
