Minority to raise galamsey concerns in parliament
The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Technology, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has announced plans to address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
He expressed concern over the government’s lack of response to the growing menace.
With Parliament resuming for the 5th meeting of its 4th session at the Accra International Conference Centre, the Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo emphasized the urgency of addressing galamsey and the government’s troubling silence on the matter.
He vowed to hold the relevant authorities accountable in Parliament for their failure to act.
Terlabi pointed out that while the entire country is united in its opposition to illegal mining, the government seems more focused on electoral gains than resolving the issue.
He also criticized the prolonged delays in passing the Environmental Protection Bill, which would grant greater regulatory power to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Terlabi accused some government ministers of deliberately stalling the bill’s progress to avoid strengthening environmental oversight.
