Minerals Commission criticizes police inaction on illegal mining

The Minerals Commission has expressed concern over the police’s lack of action in tackling illegal mining, particularly activities happening right behind the Anyinam Police Station, without intervention from security forces.

Despite illegal mining being prohibited, especially in water bodies, no arrests have been made, according to the Commission.

Speaking to the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament on Monday, October 7, Martin Ayisi, Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, voiced dissatisfaction with the police’s response, calling for more proactive measures.

Ayisi highlighted that the Commission’s role ends after reporting illegal activities to the appropriate security agencies, but questioned why the police have not taken action, especially with repeated reports of unauthorized mining behind the police station.

He stressed the importance of the District Assembly and security forces intervening when such illegal activities are identified.
