The government of Ghana has voiced its disappointment with Organised Labour’s decision to move forward with a nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, despite a recent meeting and agreement to address the issue of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Organised Labour has been urging the president to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining and to implement long-term solutions to combat the problem.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 7, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar expressed surprise at Organised Labour’s determination to strike, considering the government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining.

The government has also supported calls for presidential candidates to sign an anti-illegal mining pact and announced plans to revoke the Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I. 2462) when Parliament reconvenes.
