Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to respond to the mounting calls from civil society organizations, labour unions, and citizens to put an end to illegal mining, widely known as ‘galamsey’, which is causing widespread destruction of Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies.

Speaking at the climax of the Asogli Yam Festival in Ho on Saturday, October 5, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng stressed the urgency of addressing this environmental crisis, highlighting the significant threat it poses to the nation’s future. He emphasized that President Akufo-Addo holds the power to take decisive action against the galamsey menace and called on him to prioritize the long-term interests of the country.

“Heed the call of citizens, CSOs, professionals, academics, research institutions, and trade unions to bring an end to the destruction of our forests, water bodies, and biodiversity,” he urged, warning that the future of the country is at risk if immediate steps are not taken.

The former minister also called on the youth to hold their leaders accountable, emphasizing the role of youth activism in demanding responsible leadership. He encouraged the next government to prioritize job creation and environmental restoration, focusing on repairing the damage caused to Ghana’s natural resources and addressing unemployment.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng concluded with a direct appeal to President Akufo-Addo, saying, “Disobedience and destruction of nature cannot be endured for too long.”
