Ghanaian Diaspora Union Demands Clarity from Presidential Candidates on Port Fee Reductions

The Ghanaian Diaspora Union in Europe has asked all Presidential Candidates to come clear on their promises to reduce charges at the country’s port to reduce the cost of doing business.

The Union said it would check and hold the party or individuals accountable come January 2025.

Flag bearers of the two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party, and the National Democratic Congress have both promised to reform fees at the ports to ease the financial burden on importers and enhance business operations.

President of the Union, Ibrahim Ishaq said, such promises are too vague and general.

He said, as a Union it is considered about the excessive import duties and taxes at the country’s port of entry, stressing that the high fees are crippling many businesses and several members out of business.

Mr. Ishaq therefore urged the Flagbearer to be specific on what it intends to do to reduce the charges, calling for a 50 percent reduction on import duties.

He also asked the flag bearers to clarify the specific programs and opportunities they have earmarked to advance the interest of the Diaspora.
