NAGRAT urges ban on parents association in SHS if it undermines Free SHS policy
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the Ministry of Education to ban the Parents Association (PA) scheme in Senior High Schools if it is perceived to conflict with the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
This follows the suspension of the headteachers of Ahantaman Senior High School and St. Roses Senior High School, Akwatia, by the Ghana Education Service (GES) over accusations of collecting unauthorized fees.
NAGRAT argues these levies were introduced by the PA, not the school administrations, making the sanctions by GES unjust.
NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu, in a press briefing on October 2, called for the immediate reinstatement of the headteachers.
He explained that “with the introduction of Free Senior High School, the role of the PTA was abandoned, leaving only the Parents Association without teacher involvement.”
He added that if the Ministry of Education believes the Parents Associations are negatively affecting the Free SHS program, they should consider banning them altogether.
