Democracy Hub protesters Sue IGP and AG over human rights violations

Thirty-two members of the Democracy Hub have initiated legal action against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General, citing multiple breaches of their human rights.

Represented by Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu, the protesters are seeking a High Court ruling to safeguard their fundamental freedoms, including freedom of movement, the right to protest, personal liberty, dignity, and free expression.

The suit also calls for protection against arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, malicious prosecution, and demands the right to legal representation and bail while awaiting trial.

The plaintiffs were among 53 demonstrators arrested during a peaceful protest held from September 21 to 23, which escalated after confrontations with the police.

According to the Ghana Police Service (GPS), the protesters obstructed traffic, dismantled barriers, and caused property damage at Accra’s 37 Roundabout.

Of the 53 arrested, nine remain imprisoned while the others are still in police custody. The defense has raised concerns over the treatment of those in detention, while the prosecution insists that the detainees were properly cared for, including being provided meals from Papaye, a popular restaurant. This statement led to objections from defense lawyers.

During a bail hearing, the defense requested the release of the protesters due to the harsh conditions in custody. The prosecution opposed bail, citing concerns over the lack of confirmed addresses for the detainees.

As a result, the judge denied bail and remanded the protesters until October 8. After the court session, the remanded protesters voiced their displeasure by singing patriotic songs.
