President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged organised labour to reconsider its planned nationwide strike slated for October 10, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to addressing their grievances, particularly on illegal mining (galamsey) and its environmental impact.

During a closed-door meeting with union leaders on Thursday, October 3, President Akufo-Addo appealed for more time to tackle the pressing issues raised by organised labour. The discussion primarily focused on the devastating effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s natural resources and environment.

Organised labour has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the government’s perceived inaction on curbing galamsey, which continues to degrade ecosystems and harm communities. They argue that the government’s efforts have fallen short and are demanding urgent measures to save the environment.

The President’s appeal comes amidst growing tensions, with analysts warning that a nationwide strike could severely disrupt the economy, affecting key sectors.

A source close to the meeting indicated that President Akufo-Addo is keen on finding a resolution and has promised to hold another round of discussions with labour leaders next week to further explore solutions.

The looming strike highlights the critical need for collaboration between the government and labour groups to find lasting solutions to the galamsey crisis while safeguarding the country’s resources and economic stability.
